You've probably heard it before, potential-free. But what is it actually?
Potential-free actually means that you can switch a strange voltage with a device. An extraneous voltage is a voltage from another circuit. A normal switch switches the same voltage from the same circuit that it is offered. Consider an existing light switch as an example.
The switch says 230V and when the switch is turned the lamp turns on because it is also 230V.

Potential-free switching is therefore exactly the opposite. The switch is supplied with a voltage of 230V (phase and neutral).
Then when the switch is switched there is no voltage on the output. This is also called a dry contact because there is no voltage on it.
You then also have a loose contact, for example to close a 24V circuit.
